Most people have what I call their ‘signature’ negative self critical thoughts and voices. If you coach people for long enough ( and sometimes that is not long at all!) you can hear them behind their language and see and feel them in your clients energy, demeanour and voice tone. So for this process you either have a clear view of what their signature voices are or you don’t. If you don’t then delay using this process until these voices are clear between you and your client.
First, get permission from your client to explore these thoughts that they have. Have lots of A4 paper and some colourful pens and / or crayons, felts tips handy.
Ask the client to choose one of their common self critical thoughts to work with. For example a client’s thought might be ‘Don’t try anything new as you will fail at it, you are not good enough’. Ask them to write this at the top of a piece of paper.
